Character.AI uses the same intelligence layer across devices, but the tools differ significantly
Character.AI delivers a consistent core assistant experience on web and mobile, with the same proprietary AI model powering conversations. Whether users engage through character.ai or via the iOS/Android apps, the basic 1:1 text interaction is identical. However, major features like group chats, image attachments, and social creative tools behave differently depending on the platform, with many functions prioritized for mobile-first usage.
Voice interactions are available on both platforms, but feel more natural on mobile
Character.AI supports two types of voice features across both platforms. First, Character Voice enables AI characters to speak their replies aloud, providing an audio-enhanced experience. Second, Character Calls allow users to engage in full two-way voice conversations with an AI — a feature available on both mobile and web. However, due to tighter OS integration, mobile voice flows are smoother and more natural for quick interactions or repeated calling sessions.
Image attachments are allowed on both web and mobile, with limits depending on subscription
Users can send images to characters through either platform. On mobile, attachments can be uploaded directly from the camera or photo gallery, creating a natural flow in creative or roleplay chats. The standard daily limit is five attachments per user, while c.ai+ subscribers enjoy unlimited uploads. These visuals are integrated into the narrative conversation rather than parsed for factual analysis, reinforcing the platform’s entertainment-first approach.
Group Chat is only available on mobile for now
One of Character.AI’s most unique features—Group Chat, which allows multiple AI characters and real people to interact in the same room—is currently exclusive to mobile apps. The feature supports up to 10 human users and 10 characters per room and remains absent from the web version. Users looking to simulate dynamic multi-character conversations or engage in shared storytelling must use the iOS or Android apps to access this functionality.
Creative features like Scenes, Streams, and Feed are mostly mobile-first
Character.AI now includes several tools aimed at creators and fans of immersive fiction. Features such as Scenes (custom story setups), Streams (auto-generated moments between AIs), and a Feed of user-created content are available first in the mobile app, reinforcing a casual, scrollable experience akin to TikTok or Instagram. The Imagine Animated Chat feature, which turns conversations into animated clips, is also mobile-only and restricted to c.ai+ members. On the web, only select tools like AvatarFX—used for animating profile avatars—are prioritized.
Memory and personalization are supported on both web and mobile, with tiered limits
In 2025, Character.AI expanded Chat Memory to all users. This allows for a 400-character text memory associated with each AI character chat, editable by the user and saved across sessions. c.ai+ members receive “Better Memory”, implying longer or more complex memory capabilities, though the details remain vague. This feature is consistent across both web and mobile apps and remains one of the few deeply personalized elements available platform-wide.
There are no tools for research, citation, or document analysis
Character.AI does not support file uploads like PDFs or spreadsheets and has no integrated web browser with citations. The platform is not designed for factual verification, structured document review, or external source linking. Both web and mobile experiences are focused on imaginative dialogue, storytelling, and relationship simulation rather than productivity or research tasks.
Push notifications and chat continuity favor mobile
On mobile, Character.AI supports push notifications that alert users of replies, favorite characters’ updates, or chat resumption prompts. This makes it easier to maintain long-running conversations over time. The web version, by contrast, relies on in-tab activity and cannot notify users when the browser is closed. Asynchronous or casual users will find the mobile notification system more conducive to episodic, ongoing engagement.
Subscription unlocks parity and performance benefits on both platforms
The c.ai+ subscription applies to all versions of the service, offering benefits such as priority chat speed, fewer ads, chat styles (different response tones), unlimited media attachments, voice perks, and access to beta features. The subscription removes artificial queueing delays and unlocks consistent performance and interaction speed whether on desktop or mobile.
There is no offline mode or local inference option
Character.AI requires a live internet connection to function. Neither the mobile app nor the web version includes an offline chat mode or a locally cached AI model. All interactions are served through the cloud in real time, and the company has not announced any future plans for local AI usage on-device.
Mobile supports immersive and playful experiences, while web is better for longer sessions and character creation
The mobile app prioritizes quick creative interactions—AI calls, group chats, scrollable character feeds, and camera-based input—making it ideal for casual users or immersive play. The web platform is more suitable for focused 1:1 sessions, character creation workflows, and managing avatar assets like AvatarFX. However, key social and entertainment features remain mobile-first, confirming that Character.AI’s creative momentum is centered in the app ecosystem.
