ChatGPT Agent Mode debuts on OpenAI: the AI that plans, coordinates, and completes real-world tasks on behalf of the user.

On July 18, 2025, OpenAI announced the release of Agent Mode in the ChatGPT suite: an update that allows Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers to delegate complex, real tasks to the platform, from travel planning to business process automation.

The service is currently available to users in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, but is temporarily unavailable in Switzerland and the entire European Economic Area, including Italy, pending regulatory and technical adjustments. The first operational tests show a clear leap in the AI’s ability to transform from a simple chatbot into a true multi-tasking digital assistant.

A launch that marks a turning point in AI automation

The news of Agent Mode’s availability quickly drew the attention of industry professionals and the tech community. Announced in the release notes published by OpenAI on July 18, the new tool represents a concrete step forward toward the promise of “autonomous agents”: systems capable not only of responding to prompts, but also of making operational decisions and executing complex tasks in sequence. Activation is currently reserved for premium users, who can access the feature by selecting it from the internal ChatGPT tools menu.

How Agent Mode works: internal workflow and action orchestration

Technically, Agent Mode is configured as an intelligent orchestration layer built on top of ChatGPT’s language models. After receiving a general objective from the user (e.g., “organize a business trip to Berlin next week”), the AI analyzes the request, breaks it down into micro-tasks, and establishes a logical execution order. It then uses a combination of models (including plug-ins, external tools, and integrated APIs) to gather information, make decisions, send communications, or generate documents autonomously.

The system maintains a persistent operational state: it remembers parameters, preferences, and constraints defined at the start of the process, updating its action plan as new data emerges or obstacles arise. A control panel allows the user to monitor each step and intervene if necessary, while still leaving significant operational autonomy to the AI.

Use cases: from business automation to personal management

The introduction of Agent Mode opens the door to operational scenarios previously unattainable for a simple chatbot. In the first hours of testing, users experimented with the feature in a variety of contexts...

  • Planning complex trips: The AI can plan a complete itinerary, compare flights and hotels, generate booking emails, and sync appointments in the personal calendar.

  • Managing digital marketing campaigns: By delegating campaign creation to Agent Mode, the system can analyze the target audience, generate social content, send periodic reports, and suggest strategic adjustments based on performance.

  • Automating business workflows: In professional settings, Agent Mode can coordinate document approval sequences, compile financial reports, interface with external tools (CRM, management software), and initiate recurring processes according to company policies.

  • Personalized assistance for private users: From daily planning to managing reminders, the AI becomes a true digital assistant, able to learn the user’s preferences and anticipate recurring needs.

These use cases, only partly explored in the initial hours, demonstrate the versatility of the tool and suggest its potential adoption by both professionals and private users.

Availability, limitations, and geographic rollout

At present, Agent Mode is accessible exclusively to users on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team plans. Activation requires manual selection of the function from the tools menu, but geographic availability is limited: in Switzerland and countries of the European Economic Area, including Italy, the service is temporarily inactive, pending regulatory and technical updates. However, OpenAI has stated that the global rollout extension is planned for the coming weeks.

First reactions from the community: enthusiasm for the power, caution over supervision

The first responses from users with access to Agent Mode confirm a sense of a qualitative leap compared to previous generations of chatbots. Early testers praise the fluidity in orchestrating activities, the ability to manage dependencies, and to adapt in real time to changes in inputs. However, there are also comments on the need for detailed auditing options, to ensure that end users can monitor every decision made by the AI and intervene promptly in case of errors or misunderstandings.

The discussion remains lively: on the one hand, there is enthusiasm for the promise of truly delegating the most burdensome digital tasks; on the other, there are calls for greater transparency and control in the execution of automated actions, especially in sensitive areas such as business or finance.
