What Are ChatGPT’s File Upload Limits?

Many users of ChatGPT Plus enjoy advanced features such as uploading files (PDFs, Excel spreadsheets, images) for AI analysis.

The reset time is not fixed for everyone. Instead, the system calculates a personal reset time based on your activity, often a few hours after reaching the limit. The message will show your unique reset time (for example, “available again after 19:59”).


What Happens When You Reach Your Limit?

  • You cannot use the GPT-4o model until the reset.

  • File upload and advanced features (like document analysis, charts, or code execution) are temporarily unavailable.

  • You can still use GPT-3.5 for basic chat, but without file upload or data analysis.


Can You Increase or Remove the Limit?

Currently, individual users cannot purchase a “higher” unlimited plan for ChatGPT. However, there are business options.

  • ChatGPT Team: For teams (minimum two users), this plan costs about $30/month per user and offers higher GPT-4o and file upload limits than the Plus plan.

  • ChatGPT Enterprise: Designed for large organizations, this option provides unlimited, high-speed access to GPT-4o and all advanced features, but requires a direct agreement with OpenAI.

For most individuals, upgrading to Team is only worthwhile if you consistently hit your limits and can share the subscription with others.


What Can You Do If You Hit the Limit?

  • Wait for the reset: Your quota will automatically refresh after a few hours (check the message for your personal reset time).

  • Use GPT-3.5 for simple queries while you wait.

  • Consider upgrading to ChatGPT Team if your workload demands more frequent or heavier use.

  • Check your account login to ensure you’re using your Plus plan.
