You asked ChatGPT for a copy of your conversations, the app said the export had started, and then nothing showed up in your inbox. The wait is normal up to a point, because OpenAI states that an export can take up to 7 days and that the download link it sends stays valid for only 24 hours once it reaches you. Most missing exports fall into a few groups: the request is still being processed, the message landed in spam or promotions, the account has no export option at all because it belongs to a company workspace, or the request quietly failed and has to be made again through the Privacy Portal or OpenAI Support.

The problem affects people on the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, the accounts that can request an export from ChatGPT settings. Users on the OpenAI community forum have reported exports that never arrive since at least late 2024, with new threads in April, July and September 2026, and OpenAI staff have answered several of them. Business, Enterprise and ChatGPT for Healthcare users face a different situation, because OpenAI does not offer the settings export in those workspaces, and Edu users can export only when their administrator has switched the feature on.

HOW THE CHATGPT DATA EXPORT IS SUPPOSED TO WORK.

OpenAI's help article on exporting ChatGPT history describes two ways to request the same data. The first is inside ChatGPT on the web: sign in at chatgpt.com, open the profile menu, choose Settings, then Data controls, and under Export data select Export and then Confirm export. The second is the OpenAI Privacy Portal at privacy.openai.com, where you select Make a Privacy Request, pick the option for a consumer ChatGPT account and then choose Download my data. Both routes end with a message containing a "Download data export" button that opens a ZIP file with your chat history and other account data.

Before starting, OpenAI asks users to make sure they can reach the email inbox or the phone number linked to the account, because ChatGPT may ask you to verify that you own it. Accounts registered with a phone number only receive the ready notice by SMS instead of email. The help article describes the web steps only and gives no separate path for the iOS or Android apps.

An export copies what the account holds on the day it is produced. OpenAI states that it cannot bring back conversations you already deleted, so a ZIP that looks incomplete may simply reflect chats removed earlier. For how long OpenAI keeps deleted chats and temporary chats on its side, see our guide to ChatGPT data retention rules and user controls.

WHY THE CHATGPT EXPORT EMAIL DOES NOT ARRIVE: CAUSES, CHECKS AND FIXES.

The table below lists the causes that are either documented by OpenAI or confirmed in replies from its support staff, in the order a reader should check them. The last row covers cases with no visible cause, which several users describe on the forum.

........

Cause

How to check

Fix

Export still processing

Less than 7 days since the request

Wait; do not submit a second request

Message filtered by your mail provider

Look in spam, promotions and all-mail folders

Mark the sender as safe and search for "export"

Phone-only account

You sign in with a phone number

Check your SMS messages

Verification step interrupted the request

You received a code or link but no export notice

Verify, return to ChatGPT and request the export again

Business, Enterprise or Healthcare workspace

No Export option under Data controls

Ask your workspace owner

Edu workspace without permission

Export option missing in an Edu account

Ask your administrator to enable it

Request failed silently

Nothing after 7 days

Use the Privacy Portal, then contact OpenAI Support

........

The first three causes need no action beyond patience and a careful look at your messages. OpenAI's own troubleshooting section lists them first: wait up to 7 days, check the inbox together with the spam and promotions folders, and check SMS if the account uses only a phone number. Gmail users on the forum noticed in late 2024 that the export email often failed to appear while non-Gmail test accounts received it quickly; those users later said exports started working again in mid-December 2024, which points to a problem fixed on OpenAI's side.

STEP-BY-STEP FIXES FOR A MISSING CHATGPT EXPORT.

If fewer than 7 days have passed. OpenAI's guidance is to wait for the current request to finish before submitting another one, and ChatGPT may show that an export is already in progress. An OpenAI Support reply on the community forum in September 2026 repeated the same advice. Repeated requests on the same day did not help any of the users who described them.

1. Search every mail folder, including spam, promotions and archive, for a message mentioning your data export.

2. If you signed up with a phone number, check your text messages instead.

3. Write down the date and time of the request, which you will need if you later contact support.

If ChatGPT asked you to verify your account. OpenAI's instructions for Edu workspaces spell out the order: verify by email when asked, return to ChatGPT and start the export again, then confirm. The consumer article mentions verification without detailing the sequence. A user on the forum described receiving the code email to start the export and never the export itself; one plausible explanation, not confirmed by OpenAI, is that the request stopped at the verification step.

1. Open the verification message and complete it.

2. Go back to chatgpt.com in the same browser and the same account.

3. Open Settings, then Data controls, select Export under Export data and confirm.

If you were signed out or recently changed devices. In July 2026 the OpenAI Support account on the community forum asked a user whether ChatGPT had prompted a fresh sign-in during the export, and suggested signing in again on ChatGPT web and retrying straight away, saying this had sometimes worked because of the recent login window. The same reply asked users whose exports still failed to record a HAR file, a browser log of the network requests made by the page, during the export and attach it to their existing support email.

1. Sign out of chatgpt.com and sign back in.

2. Request the export immediately after signing in.

3. If it still fails, keep the support case open and add the HAR file when support asks for it.

If 7 days have passed with nothing. OpenAI's troubleshooting section says to contact OpenAI Support at that point, through help.openai.com. The Privacy Portal is the documented alternative channel for the same data, and OpenAI points users who cannot sign in to it as well.

1. Go to privacy.openai.com and select Make a Privacy Request.

2. Choose the option for a consumer ChatGPT account.

3. Select Download my data and complete the verification it asks for.

4. Contact OpenAI Support through help.openai.com, giving the dates of every request.

The two channels are recorded separately. One user wrote in July 2026 that support found no request under their email "via our Privacy Portal" and asked them to file one there, even though they had already used the button in settings several times.

CHATGPT BUSINESS, ENTERPRISE AND EDU: WHY THE EXPORT OPTION IS MISSING.

Many people who never receive an export email are signed in to a work or school account, where the request cannot run at all. OpenAI's article on managing data in ChatGPT Business answers the question directly: "Data export is not available in a ChatGPT Business workspace." The export article extends the same exclusion to Enterprise and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces and tells those users to contact their workspace owner.

ChatGPT Edu is the partial exception. OpenAI's Edu export article says data export is off by default, that an administrator must enable it, and that members need the export permission through the workspace default or a custom role. Workspaces with any data residency configuration cannot use it, and each member can export only their own data. Edu exports contain conversations.json (or numbered conversation JSON files for large accounts), the files used in conversations and account metadata, and processing also takes up to 7 days.

The Privacy Portal does not replace these rules. When a user reported in April 2026 that the Export option was missing and that three "Download my data" requests on the portal were cancelled within a day, an OpenAI Support reply explained that the portal does not cover business accounts (Enterprise, Business, Edu and API) and that data managed by an organization goes through its administrator. The same reply said the behavior would be unexpected on a regular personal account and asked the user to contact support.

OpenAI adds one warning for anyone about to join a company plan: export and check your personal data before moving or merging a personal workspace into a Business, Enterprise, Edu or Healthcare workspace, because once the personal workspace is removed you may lose access to earlier export links or be unable to request new exports from it.

WHEN THE CHATGPT EXPORT EMAIL ARRIVES BUT THE LINK FAILS.

A second group of reports concerns emails that do arrive but open an error page instead of a download. The messages below are quoted from forum posts by users; OpenAI has not published a list of export errors, so the "likely reason" column reflects the official rules on link expiry and account sign-in where they apply.

........

Message reported by users

Likely reason

What to do

{"detail":"Invalid signature or expired URL"}

The link is older than 24 hours

Request a new export

{"detail":"Not found."}

Browser signed in to a different account

Sign in to the account that made the request

{"detail":"Internal Server Error"}

Server-side failure, not explained by OpenAI

Request again later or contact support

........

OpenAI's article says to download the file while signed in to the same account that requested it, and one forum user traced a "Not found" error to exactly that mismatch: the export had been requested from one account in the app while the browser was signed in to another. The 24-hour limit is the other common trap, since the clock starts when the message arrives, so an email opened two days later will no longer work. Two users also described large downloads stopping partway, at about 70 MB in one case and at 400 to 500 MB in another; OpenAI has not addressed this, and the only documented remedy for a link that no longer works is a new request.

⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁤

WHAT OPENAI DOCUMENTS AND WHAT USERS ONLY REPORT ABOUT CHATGPT EXPORTS.

The official material is limited but clear on the basics: the two request channels, the up to 7 days of processing, the 24-hour link, the requirement to be signed in to the requesting account, the excluded workspace types and the advice to contact support after 7 days. OpenAI has not published any explanation for exports that never arrive, and its support replies on the forum ask for account details, browser logs and support case numbers, which suggests each case is investigated individually.

Everything else comes from users. Workarounds such as turning off the model training setting, deleting old conversations, switching to the mobile app or turning off a VPN each worked for a single person in the threads read for this guide, and each failed for others, so none of them can be presented as a fix. Reports also come in waves (late 2024, early 2025, spring and summer 2026), and in the 2024 episode users said exports began working again without any change on their side.

HOW TO AVOID LOSING YOUR NEXT CHATGPT EXPORT.

A few habits remove most of the risk. Request the export from chatgpt.com in the browser where you normally use ChatGPT, stay signed in to that account until the file is saved, and download the ZIP as soon as the message arrives so the 24-hour window never becomes a problem. Keep a note of each request date, since both support and the Privacy Portal treat the requests as separate records.

Uploaded files follow their own retention rules and can expire long before an export is made; our explainer on the ChatGPT "file is no longer available" error covers how long uploaded files last. Usage limits on each plan are covered separately in our guide to ChatGPT usage limits and message caps.

··········

CHATGPT DATA EXPORT DELAYS: WHEN TO WAIT AND WHEN TO ESCALATE.

A missing ChatGPT export email is usually a waiting problem during the first 7 days and a support problem after that. Within the first week, the useful checks are the spam and promotions folders, SMS for phone-only accounts, a completed verification step and a fresh sign-in before one new request. After 7 days, OpenAI's documented path is a Download my data request on the Privacy Portal plus a message to OpenAI Support with the dates of every attempt.

Accounts in Business, Enterprise or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces have no self-service export, and Edu accounts depend on their administrator, so for those users the workspace owner is the only route. For a link that arrives and then fails, the documented checks are the 24-hour limit and the account you are signed in to, and any remaining server error has no official explanation so far.
