Claude Free in 2026 is a real $0 plan, not a timed trial. Its main usage restriction is not a published fixed message quota: Anthropic applies a session-based allowance that resets every five hours, and the practical number of prompts changes with message length, attachments, tools, model choice, effort and system demand.
Free currently includes Sonnet and Haiku, a 200K context window and up to five Projects. It also supports web search, file analysis, code execution and file creation, but tool-heavy or long-context work consumes the allowance faster than short text chats.

HOW THE FIVE-HOUR FREE LIMIT ACTUALLY WORKS
Anthropic describes Free as a session-based allowance rather than a fixed daily prompt count. The allowance resets every five hours. How quickly it is consumed depends on total input length, accumulated conversation history, attachments, tools, model, effort and system demand.
A short text-only conversation therefore behaves very differently from a long thread that repeatedly sends a PDF through search, analysis and file-generation tools.
Hypothetical example: twenty short prompts can consume less allowance than a handful of long requests that repeatedly include a large PDF, web searches and generated files. This illustrates the mechanism; it is not an official message quota.

WHY ‘X MESSAGES PER DAY’ IS THE WRONG WAY TO DESCRIBE CLAUDE FREE
Search results and older guides often quote a fixed number of free messages. Anthropic’s current documentation does not define Claude Free that way. The stable rule is the five-hour reset; the count of prompts inside a session is variable.
For practical use, the useful question is how much context and tool work each request consumes. Long histories, large attachments and multi-step tool calls reduce the number of interactions available inside the same session allowance.

MODELS AND CONTEXT ON THE FREE PLAN
Claude Free currently provides Sonnet and Haiku with a 200K-token context window. Context is the maximum working material Claude can consider in a conversation; it is separate from the usage allowance.
A 200K context window does not mean a Free account can repeatedly fill 200K tokens without hitting usage limits. Long context is itself one of the factors that causes the session allowance to fall faster.

FILE UPLOAD LIMITS
In regular Claude chat, a single uploaded file can be up to 500 MB and a chat can contain up to 20 files. Supported document and data formats include PDF, DOCX, CSV, TXT, HTML, ODT, RTF, EPUB, JSON and XLSX, alongside JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP images.
PDFs can reach 1,000 pages. Anthropic applies visual-and-text analysis through page 100; pages 101–1,000 receive text-only processing. Images can be up to 8,000 × 8,000 pixels.
The size ceiling is not a promise that a very large document will fit comfortably into every Free session. Extracted content still competes for context and consumes usage.

PROJECT LIMITS
Projects are available to Free users, with up to five Projects on the Free plan. Project knowledge can contain an unlimited number of files in principle, but each project file is capped at 30 MB and the combined knowledge must fit within the available context.
Projects can also reduce repeated consumption when the same reference material is reused, because Claude can cache project content instead of processing every attachment from scratch.

WEB SEARCH, CODE EXECUTION, AND FILE CREATION
Free users can use web search, file analysis, code execution and file creation. These capabilities share the plan’s usage allowance rather than creating an independent pool.
A request that searches the web, runs code and exports a spreadsheet is therefore more resource-intensive than a short text reply.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HIT THE LIMIT
When the Free session allowance is exhausted, Claude displays the next reset time. Waiting for the five-hour window to reset restores the Free allowance; starting a new chat does not bypass the account-level usage restriction.
Reducing attachment size, starting a fresh thread when old history is no longer needed, and keeping prompts focused can stretch the same allowance further.

CLAUDE FREE VS PRO AND MAX
Free is $0. Pro is $20 monthly or $200 annually and is advertised with about five times more usage per session than Free, plus a 1M-token context window and up to 20 Projects. Max adds substantially larger usage pools at $100 per month for Max 5x and $200 per month for Max 20x.
Paid plans can still have session and weekly limits. Upgrading increases capacity; it does not convert Claude into an unlimited service.

WHO CLAUDE FREE FITS IN 2026
Claude Free is well suited to occasional chat, document review, light research, coding help and smaller project workflows. It becomes restrictive when a workflow repeatedly uses long conversations, large files, deep web research or file-generation tools within the same five-hour window.
The practical upgrade trigger is repeated interruption by the session limit, not the existence of a single large context window or file.
