Copilot on Windows: Latest Version, Features, and What’s New

Copilot on Windows has evolved rapidly over the past year, becoming one of the most prominent generative AI tools embedded in the Windows ecosystem.

With the 2024 and 2025 updates, Microsoft has pushed Copilot far beyond its origins as a web-based assistant, transforming it into a powerful desktop app with new capabilities, a modern interface, and deep integration with Windows 11. Here we share a comprehensive look at the most updated version, its features, and what users can expect as of mid-2025.

1. System Requirements and OS Integration

The latest standalone Copilot Desktop App requires Windows 11, version 24H2 or later. This version, widely known as the Windows 11 2024 Update, rolled out to the general public in October 2024 and remains essential for unlocking Copilot’s advanced features.

If you’re running an older Windows build, you may see the Copilot app but miss out on core functionalities like Copilot Vision, Labs Actions, and expanded voice commands.

Once installed, the Copilot Desktop App integrates tightly into the Windows shell. It can be launched from the taskbar, Start menu, or through voice commands (where supported), making it as accessible as any built-in Windows tool.

2. The Current Copilot Desktop App Version

As of June 2025, the most current production version of the Copilot Desktop App is 1.25054.80.0. This version delivers all the latest AI upgrades, security patches, and user interface refinements. Microsoft updates Copilot via the Microsoft Store, so most users on Windows 11 24H2 or newer will receive the latest features automatically after running Store updates.

Users on enterprise or education editions without Store access can sideload the latest MSIX package. Insider channels sometimes receive even newer test builds, but for most users, 1.25054.80.0 is the standard.

3. Major Features and Upgrades

Voice Mode and “Think Deeper” Reasoning

Copilot’s voice interaction capabilities have improved dramatically. You can now dictate prompts, have Copilot read results aloud, and even trigger the app with a “Hey Copilot” wake word on supported systems. The “Think Deeper” mode, available to all users, routes questions through a deeper reasoning engine to provide longer, more thoughtful answers. Both features are now unlimited and available to all users, free and paid.

Copilot Vision

One of the most significant upgrades in 2025 is Copilot Vision. This tool lets users share any open window, browser tab, document, or even a CAD drawing with Copilot. The assistant can then analyze the content, annotate directly within the shared view, and answer context-aware questions. This feature streamlines workflows involving PDFs, spreadsheets, or other visual data, bringing AI-powered analysis directly to your desktop environment.

Copilot Labs and Actions

Labs Actions expand Copilot’s practical abilities by letting you trigger “actions” such as booking a meeting, summarizing a shopping cart, or interacting with web services directly from the Copilot sidebar. This transforms Copilot from a passive assistant into an active participant in daily tasks, with new Labs features rolling out every few weeks.

History, Memory, and Sidebar

The latest versions introduce a revamped sidebar with session history, pinning, and renaming. Users can pick up past conversations, reference previous results, or organize ongoing projects with persistent memory. This makes Copilot a more effective tool for research, content creation, and complex workflows.

Modern User Interface

The UI has seen a complete refresh, adopting a left-aligned sidebar for quick access to chats and actions. Copilot’s design now matches the broader Microsoft 365 experience, offering a clean, distraction-free workspace with accessible controls for voice, Vision, and Labs.

4. How to Check Your Version and Stay Updated

Step 1: Confirm Your Windows Version

  • Click the Start menu (Windows icon on the taskbar), then select Settings (the gear icon).

  • In the Settings window, click System on the left panel.

  • Scroll down and select About at the bottom of the System menu.

  • In the About section, find the line labeled Windows specifications.

  • Look for Version and OS build. You should see Windows 11 24H2 and a build number like 26100.x or higher. If you see an earlier version, go back to the main Settings menu, select Windows Update, and click Check for updates. Install all available updates and restart your PC if prompted.

Step 2: Check Your Copilot Desktop App Version

  • Click the Start menu or press the Windows key on your keyboard.

  • Type Copilot in the search bar. Click on Copilot (the standalone app) from the search results.

  • When Copilot opens, look for the menu icon (three dots ⋯) in the top right or left corner of the app window.

  • Click the menu icon, then select Settings or About from the dropdown menu.

  • In the About section, you’ll see the version number. If it says 1.25054.80.0 or a higher number, you have the latest release. If not, proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Update Copilot from the Microsoft Store

  • Open the Microsoft Store (find it in the Start menu or taskbar).

  • In the Store window, click Library on the left sidebar (books icon).

  • At the top right of the Library page, click Get updates. The Store will check for updates for all installed apps, including Copilot.

  • Wait for the updates to download and install. If Copilot is updated, you will see it in the list.

  • Once finished, you can re-open Copilot and check the version again as described above.

Step 4: For Enterprise or Managed Devices

  • If your device doesn’t have access to the Microsoft Store (common in business or education environments), contact your IT department or administrator.

  • IT administrators can download the latest Copilot MSIX package directly from Microsoft and deploy it using your organization’s standard app deployment process.

  • For environments with Group Policy restrictions, make sure that app updates and Copilot-specific settings are enabled for users to receive the latest features.

Extra Tips

  • Make sure automatic updates are enabled in the Microsoft Store for hassle-free updating in the future.

  • For best performance and new features, keep both your Windows OS and Copilot Desktop App fully up to date.

  • If you’re part of the Windows Insider Program, you may receive Copilot updates slightly earlier than standard users. Be aware that these versions may include experimental features.

5. What’s Coming Next

Microsoft’s roadmap for Copilot on Windows includes the global expansion of Vision (initially U.S.-only), more sophisticated Labs Actions, and additional memory features for organizing and summarizing large projects. Upcoming updates are expected to introduce multi-window Vision analysis, improved voice wake-word reliability, and new privacy controls, especially for enterprise deployments.

Users can expect monthly app updates through the Microsoft Store, with major features often previewed to Insiders before general availability.

6. Limitations and Considerations

While Copilot is now a core part of Windows, there are still a few limitations. Vision may be restricted to certain regions or Insider builds until later in 2025. Full offline access is not supported—Copilot requires an internet connection to reach Microsoft’s cloud AI. Some advanced Labs Actions are only available with a Copilot Pro subscription. Enterprise users should also note that new telemetry fields are enabled for diagnostics and feature feedback.

7. Practical Tips for IT and Power Users

  • Onboard users to the latest Windows 11 24H2 build for the best Copilot experience.

  • Enable automatic updates in the Microsoft Store to ensure new features arrive without delay.

  • Use Group Policy or sideloading for environments without direct Store access.

  • Review privacy and telemetry settings, especially in managed or educational contexts.

  • Test Vision and Labs features in a controlled environment before rolling out company-wide, especially if workflows depend on document sharing and real-time AI analysis.
