DeepSeek still separates its consumer experience from its developer economics. The web and mobile products remain the entry point for people who want to chat, search, reason, and work with files without buying API tokens, while developer usage is billed independently through the API platform.
The distinction is important because older descriptions of a single “free tier” can mix together three different things: free consumer chat, granted API balance, and open-weight models that can be self-hosted at the user’s own infrastructure cost.
