OpenAI expands Finances in ChatGPT to Free and Go users with connected accounts for spending, savings and investments

OpenAI has expanded Finances in ChatGPT to Free and Go users in the United States, bringing its connected personal-finance experience beyond the paid Plus and Pro tiers.
The rollout, announced on October 2, makes Finances available across Free, Go, Plus and Pro on web, iOS and Android in the U.S. Eligible users can connect supported bank, credit-card, brokerage and other financial accounts through Plaid and ask ChatGPT questions grounded in their actual financial data.
Finances combines conversational analysis with a dedicated dashboard covering spending, recurring bills, subscriptions, net worth and investment portfolios. Credit-report information can separately be connected through Experian, adding credit-score analysis to the same financial workspace.
The expansion substantially increases the potential audience for one of ChatGPT's most data-intensive consumer features: instead of describing their finances manually, users can give ChatGPT read-only access to connected financial context and analyze it conversationally.

FREE AND GO USERS CAN NOW CONNECT REAL FINANCIAL ACCOUNTS TO CHATGPT
The central difference between Finances and an ordinary financial conversation with ChatGPT is the connected data layer.
Users can open Finances and connect supported financial institutions through Plaid. Once authenticated, account information is synchronized and categorized so ChatGPT can reason over the user's financial position without requiring balances and transactions to be entered manually.
The available information depends on what each institution exposes through the connection. It can include balances, transactions, investment holdings and other account-level data, although some institutions may provide only a subset.
This means a user can ask questions such as where spending increased, which recurring charges are active or how a portfolio is allocated and receive an answer based on connected records rather than a hypothetical example.
Account synchronization occurs automatically after connection, while the Finances interface displays the latest synchronization status and identifies connections requiring attention.

THE DASHBOARD COMBINES SPENDING, BILLS, NET WORTH AND INVESTMENTS
Finances includes a dedicated dashboard rather than operating exclusively through conversational prompts.
Depending on the data available, the dashboard can display spending by category, current-month spending, upcoming payments, subscriptions, recurring bills, net worth and portfolio allocation.
Investment views can separate holdings across asset classes including equities, bonds, ETFs, cash and crypto. Market information can also show changes in individual equity positions alongside their current value and position size.
The result is a financial overview assembled from multiple connected accounts.
A user with a checking account at one institution, credit cards elsewhere and investments at a brokerage can therefore analyze those relationships from a common interface, subject to the information made available through each connection.
Users can also rearrange dashboard widgets and choose which financial views remain visible.

CHATGPT CAN ANSWER QUESTIONS DIRECTLY AGAINST CONNECTED TRANSACTIONS
The conversational layer allows users to move from observing financial data to interrogating it.
A spending question can be evaluated against transaction history. Subscription analysis can identify recurring charges. Budget questions can incorporate recent spending patterns, while portfolio questions can use connected investment holdings.
The same mechanism enables more contextual queries.
Instead of asking how a generic household might reduce monthly expenses, a user can ask ChatGPT to examine their own spending categories and recurring payments and identify areas worth reviewing.
Users can access this financial context from the dedicated Finances page or invoke it from a normal ChatGPT conversation through @finances or /finances.
When connected financial data contributes to an answer, ChatGPT can expose the underlying source data so the user can inspect what was used.

PLAID PROVIDES THE CONNECTION BETWEEN CHATGPT AND FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS
OpenAI uses Plaid for financial-account connectivity.
The integration supports connections across thousands of financial institutions rather than requiring OpenAI to build and maintain an independent interface for every bank, card issuer and brokerage.
Users choose which institutions and accounts to connect. ChatGPT receives the financial information made available through those authorized connections, while access is designed to be read-only.
That distinction defines an important boundary around the product.
Finances can inspect and reason over account information, but ChatGPT cannot use the feature to transfer money, pay bills or execute investment trades.
The product therefore functions as an analysis and planning layer over financial accounts rather than as a banking or brokerage execution system.

EXPERIAN ADDS CREDIT SCORES AS A SEPARATE FINANCIAL DATA SOURCE
Bank and investment accounts are not the only external financial information that Finances can use.
OpenAI has also integrated Experian credit-report data and VantageScore 3.0 credit scores into the experience.
The Experian connection is separate from Plaid. A user can therefore connect credit information without connecting bank accounts, connect bank accounts without providing credit-report access, or use both.
When enabled, Finances can display the user's credit score, factors affecting it and score history as monthly updates become available.
This allows questions about credit utilization, recent score changes or preparation for a major credit application to be considered alongside broader financial context.
Credit-report information does not update in real time. It reflects the information reported to Experian, so recent payments or account changes may not immediately appear.

FINANCIAL MEMORIES ADD INFORMATION THAT CANNOT BE IMPORTED FROM AN ACCOUNT
Connected accounts provide quantitative data but cannot fully describe a person's financial situation.
A bank connection can reveal a balance or transaction. It does not inherently know that the user is saving for a house, intends to replace a car next year or has an informal private debt that does not appear in a connected account.
Finances therefore includes financial memories for contextual information supplied directly by the user.
This can include savings goals, planned purchases, mortgages, private loans or other obligations and preferences that may affect subsequent financial analysis.
The combination creates two distinct information layers:
........
Financial context | Source |
Transactions and balances | Connected financial accounts |
Investment holdings | Connected brokerage accounts |
Credit report and score | Experian |
Savings goals | User-provided financial memory |
Planned major purchases | User-provided financial memory |
Unsupported assets or liabilities | User-provided financial memory |
Personal financial preferences | User-provided financial memory |
........
This allows ChatGPT to reason not only from what has already happened in the accounts but also from financial objectives that may influence future decisions.

CONNECTED DATA CAN STILL BE INCOMPLETE OR REQUIRE CORRECTION
Connecting an account does not guarantee that every financial field will be available.
A financial institution might provide balances while withholding detailed transaction history, or expose investments without all associated metadata. Historical coverage can also differ between institutions.
Transaction categorization introduces another source of uncertainty.
Transfers between accounts, credit-card payments, reimbursements and pending transactions can distort spending calculations if they are interpreted incorrectly. Users can ask ChatGPT to explain which transactions were included and correct classifications that do not reflect their actual finances.
The dashboard should therefore be treated as an analytical representation of the available connected data rather than an independent financial ledger.
For consequential decisions, balances, transactions and investment information can still be checked against the underlying financial institution.

USERS RETAIN SEPARATE CONTROL OVER BANKING AND CREDIT CONNECTIONS
Plaid financial accounts and Experian credit information are maintained as separate connections.
Users can manage individual accounts from the Accounts section in Finances, including removing connections or addressing synchronization problems.
Disconnecting Finances removes connected financial data from ChatGPT, while existing conversation history containing information previously discussed must be managed separately.
Temporary Chat creates an additional boundary: temporary conversations do not access connected financial accounts and do not use or create memories for personalization.
The distinction is particularly relevant for financial information because Finances can aggregate data that would otherwise remain distributed across several institutions.
The usefulness of that aggregation depends directly on the user's willingness to authorize the relevant connections, making connection management and visibility into the data being used central components of the product.

THE FREE AND GO EXPANSION CHANGES THE SCALE OF CHATGPT'S PERSONAL-FINANCE PRODUCT
Finances began as a relatively restricted experience for Pro users before reaching Plus and now Free and Go.
Opening connected financial analysis to the lower tiers changes the potential scale of the product more significantly than adding another individual dashboard widget.
The core capability is now available across all four major consumer ChatGPT plans in the United States, although usage limits and the gradual nature of the rollout can still affect individual availability.
That places account-grounded financial analysis alongside the broader set of ChatGPT capabilities available without a premium subscription.
The product remains deliberately separated from financial execution: it can analyze, explain and help users plan against connected information, but it cannot move money or place trades.
The October 2 expansion therefore turns Finances from a feature concentrated in ChatGPT's paid tiers into a much broader consumer product, with connected financial data becoming another form of personal context that ChatGPT can use directly when answering questions.
