OpenAI introduces the new “Study” feature in ChatGPT: it helps students for exams and more

ree
OpenAI officially launched the “Study” feature on July 23, 2025, confirming what had been a beta experiment for Plus subscribers since July 6.
With this new integration, ChatGPT positions itself in the personalized learning market, offering advanced tools for exam preparation, quizzes, and collaborative study sessions.

The new Study function is designed to make ChatGPT a true personalized tutor.

OpenAI describes the feature as a “guided study environment.” Users can upload or paste material—such as notes, slides, or problem sets—and ask the model to generate review plans, flashcards, self-assessment exercises, and exam simulations. The system automatically segments content into learning units and proposes sessions marked by objectives, timers, and review suggestions based on spaced repetition techniques.

This design moves the experience beyond simple Q&A: ChatGPT acts as a coach, tracking progress and adapting the difficulty as the student demonstrates mastery of topics.

The journey from initial beta sightings to official confirmation is now clear.

On July 6, 2025, some Plus users spotted the “Study Together” option in ChatGPT’s sidebar, allowing the creation of study sessions but without official branding or documentation. The following day, several tech publications reported the feature, suggesting it was a limited rollout for feedback collection.

On July 23, OpenAI issued an in-app banner and release note, confirming the final name “Study” and announcing gradual availability for all Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers by August.

The Study section offers practical and flexible learning tools for every user.

Within the “Study” tab, users find several capabilities: rapid import of materials (PDF, text, or photos of notes), automatic extraction and indexing of key concepts, a dynamic study plan generated based on the exam date, adaptive quizzes (multiple choice, open-ended, numeric problems), step-by-step explanations, instant scoring, and spaced repetition reminders that prompt review where the user shows the most uncertainty. There’s also a group mode, with shareable links for inviting classmates into collaborative rooms, peer difficulty ratings, and a contextual group chat.

The implications for schools, universities, and professional training are significant.

With “Study,” ChatGPT becomes an educational hub that unites synthesis, explanation, and assessment in one seamless flow. Schools can offer students a 24/7 virtual tutor; universities can integrate exercise banks and study materials, tailoring support to each learner. In professional contexts—like IT certifications, languages, or exam preparation—the new mode could shorten study times and provide realistic test simulations.

OpenAI’s release plan and next steps for the Study feature are now in motion.

OpenAI aims to complete the global rollout by the end of August. In September, an analytics dashboard for teachers and trainers will debut, providing aggregate (anonymous) statistics on student progress. An API “Study Kit” is also in development, allowing edTech platforms to embed generative quizzes and flashcards powered by ChatGPT. With this official confirmation, OpenAI strengthens its strategy to expand beyond general-purpose chat, targeting high-engagement verticals such as education and professional training.
