ChatGPT file uploads are governed by several independent limits. The headline 512 MB maximum is only one of them: text documents also face a 2 million-token ceiling, spreadsheets have a much smaller practical file-size cap, images have their own limit, and upload frequency and stored-file capacity are controlled separately.

512 MB IS NOT THE EFFECTIVE LIMIT FOR EVERY DOCUMENT
A text-heavy PDF or Word document can hit the 2 million-token ceiling long before reaching 512 MB. Conversely, a binary-heavy file can approach the file-size ceiling without containing anywhere near 2 million tokens of usable text.
DS calculation: using a rough planning assumption of four characters per token, 2 million tokens correspond to about 8 million characters of text. The exact relationship varies by language and content, so this is a sizing heuristic rather than an OpenAI quota conversion.

SPREADSHEETS AND IMAGES HAVE DIFFERENT CAPS
CSV and spreadsheet uploads are limited to roughly 50 MB, with the practical ceiling depending on row size. Images are limited to 20 MB each.
These limits reflect different processing paths: spreadsheets are parsed as structured data, while images use visual processing rather than the text-document ingestion path.

UPLOAD FREQUENCY IS SEPARATE FROM FILE SIZE
A 1 MB file can still fail if the rolling rate limit has been reached. OpenAI currently documents up to 80 file uploads every three hours, while Free users are limited to three uploads per day, with the possibility of lower limits during peak demand.

PROJECT FILE LIMITS BY PLAN
Current Project limits are 5 files per Project for Free, 25 for Go and Plus, and 40 for Edu, Pro, Business, and Enterprise.
These are file-count limits for Projects, not per-file size limits, so they operate alongside the 512 MB, token, and spreadsheet/image caps.

LIBRARY STORAGE IS ALSO PLAN-SPECIFIC
OpenAI currently lists 500 MB of Library storage for Free, 4 GB for Go, 20 GB for Plus and Business, and 100 GB for Pro.
The File Uploads FAQ separately documents broader usage caps of 25 GB per end user and 100 GB per organization. These figures describe different storage layers and should not be merged into one universal account limit.

PDF, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, XLS, CSV, TSV and TXT are among the explicitly documented supported formats. Format support determines whether ChatGPT can ingest the file; the limits above determine whether that upload is accepted and how much content can be processed.
