The ChatGPT Free plan now provides unlimited everyday text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, subject to abuse safeguards, but higher-cost tools still use separate limits. Free is therefore a bundle of different allowances rather than one universal message cap.
Free users can use Think with GPT-5.6 Luna and can access web search, file and image uploads, data analysis, image creation, GPT discovery, memory, and research with tighter allowances than paid plans.

DEFAULT MODEL — GPT-5.6 LUNA
GPT-5.6 Luna is the default GPT-5.6 path for Free users. It is distinct from GPT-5.6 Sol, which powers higher reasoning levels on eligible paid plans.
The Free Think control also uses Luna. Pressing Think on Free does not temporarily unlock the Sol reasoning tier.

Everyday Free text chats are unlimited subject to guardrails, but uploads, image generation, data analysis, deep research, memory, and other tool calls have separate allowances.
