ChatGPT will merge its Chat and Work tabs, keeping Codex separate

OpenAI is folding the two main tabs of ChatGPT, Chat and Work, into a single view, so that a conversation can turn into a multi-step task without the user switching modes first. The company described the change in an email to subscribers that became public on November 2, 2026, writing that the combined view "will enable you to move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through, all in one place." The same email states that "Codex will remain a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app," which means the coding agent keeps its own space while everything else moves under one roof.
The merged view is not arriving for everyone at once. OpenAI said it will first go to a select group of users, whose feedback will shape the version that later rolls out more broadly. The company has not published a date for either stage, has not said how test users are chosen, and has not described the change in a public blog post or release note. Everything confirmed so far comes from the email as quoted in press coverage and from OpenAI's existing Help Center documentation for the Work mode.
The interface change lands alongside a billing change that OpenAI had already documented: from December, ChatGPT and Codex will draw on one shared usage allowance for Plus, Pro and Business subscribers, with ordinary Instant chats excluded from that pool. OpenAI said in the email that most users will not be affected, while some may wait for resets more often depending on the models they use and how heavily they use them.

HOW CHATGPT CHAT, WORK AND CODEX ARE SPLIT TODAY.
According to OpenAI's Help Center, Work is one of three modes in the current ChatGPT desktop app, next to Chat and Codex. OpenAI describes Work as the place to "research, analyze information, and create documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and Sites," and says the desktop app that hosts it runs on macOS and Windows. Chat remains the conversational mode for questions, answers and brainstorming, while Codex is the coding agent that writes and edits software inside the same application.
The split has practical consequences that the Help Center spells out. Chat conversations sync between the web and the desktop app, but Work behaves differently: at launch, Work conversations started in the cloud did not appear in desktop Work, and desktop Work threads and their local files stay on the computer where they were created. A user who begins a quick question in Chat and then decides the job needs a finished spreadsheet currently has to move the task to a different tab, with its own history and its own storage rules.
OpenAI introduced Work in July 2026 as its agent for longer business tasks across connected apps and files, and the mode has since gained features such as the Data agent for warehouse connections, which Data Studios covered in our report on the Data agent in ChatGPT Work. The email suggests OpenAI now sees the two-tab design as a source of friction for people who move between quick questions and longer tasks.

WHAT THE MERGED CHATGPT VIEW WILL DO.
In the combined view, a user starts a conversation as usual and can then ask ChatGPT to carry out the work in the same thread. The email lists the kinds of requests it has in mind: bringing in files and plugins, asking ChatGPT to build a website or a presentation, or having it perform web tasks, while the user reviews what it produces along the way. Press reports describing the email also mention that users will be able to track several projects from the same place.
The table below sets out what OpenAI has confirmed about the change against the current layout.
........
Area | Current ChatGPT desktop app | After the merge (as described by OpenAI) |
Conversation | Chat tab | One combined view |
Documents, sites, research tasks | Separate Work tab | Requested from the same conversation |
Files and plugins | Used inside Work | Brought into the combined view |
Coding agent | Codex tab | Codex stays separate in the desktop app |
Rollout | Work rolled out gradually from July 2026 | Select users first, wider release later, no dates |
Usage allowance | ChatGPT and Codex not pooled | One pool for ChatGPT and Codex from December |
........
Some details are missing from what OpenAI has said. The email does not state whether the merged view will reach the web and mobile apps at the same time as the desktop app, whether ChatGPT will pick between a direct answer and an agentic task on its own or let the user choose, or how local desktop Work threads will appear once the tabs are combined. It also gives no detail on admin controls for Business and Enterprise workspaces.

WHAT CHANGES FOR CHATGPT PLUS, PRO AND BUSINESS USERS.
For most subscribers, nothing changes immediately. The merged view is a test for a limited group, so the existing Chat, Work and Codex tabs remain the working setup until OpenAI widens the rollout. Users who rely on Work for reports, spreadsheets or Sites can keep using it as before, and developers using Codex should expect it to stay where it is, since OpenAI has explicitly kept it out of the merge.
The December allowance change is the part with a fixed date. Plus, Pro and Business plans will count ChatGPT and Codex usage against one pool, with Instant chats outside it, so a heavy day of agentic tasks in the combined view and a long Codex session will draw down the same budget. Data Studios explained the mechanics in our article on the shared ChatGPT and Codex usage limit, and plan-by-plan caps are collected in our guide to ChatGPT usage limits and message caps. The broader reference on plans, files and models is our ChatGPT guide for 2026.
Practical steps follow from those two changes. Users who split long projects between Work and Codex should check their usage in the app once the shared pool starts in December, since agentic tasks and more capable models consume more of the allowance than quick replies. Teams that keep important material in desktop Work threads should remember that, under OpenAI's current documentation, those threads and their local files live on a single computer, and they should not assume the merged view will move them to the cloud until OpenAI says so.

HOW THE CHATGPT MERGE COMPARES WITH CLAUDE'S UNIFIED APP.
Anthropic made a similar move in September. On September 16, 2026, it announced that "Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude," so that users "don't have to choose where a task goes." In Anthropic's version, Claude works out what a task needs and can use Cowork and Claude Design capabilities from any conversation, asking before it takes an action by default. Anthropic launched Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta on paid plans with the same update, and the unified experience became generally available for Claude Enterprise on October 23. Data Studios covered that launch in our article on the Claude Cowork and Chat merge.
........
Point | ChatGPT (announced November 2026) | Claude (announced September 2026) |
What merges | Chat and Work tabs | Chat and Cowork |
Kept separate | Codex in the desktop app | Standalone Claude Design keeps working as before |
Who gets it first | Select users for feedback | Pro, Max and Ultra, then Team and Free |
Platforms named | Desktop app (Codex note) | Web, desktop and mobile |
Enterprise handling | Not described | GA on October 23, 30 days' notice to admins |
Mode selection | Not described | Claude decides what the task needs |
........
The comparison shows where OpenAI's plan is still thin on detail. Anthropic published a plan-by-plan rollout order, named the platforms and set a notice period for enterprise administrators, while OpenAI has so far communicated a direction and a testing phase. The two companies are converging on the same idea: one conversation that can stay a chat or become a delegated piece of work, with the coding agent handled as its own product.

CHATGPT CHAT AND WORK MERGE: CONFIRMED FACTS AND OPEN QUESTIONS.
OpenAI has confirmed, in its email to subscribers, that the Chat and Work tabs will become one view, that files, plugins, website and presentation building, and web tasks will be available from that view, that Codex remains separate in the desktop app, and that the change starts with a select group of users before a wider release. Its documentation separately confirms the shared ChatGPT and Codex allowance from December for Plus, Pro and Business, with Instant chats excluded.
Several points remain open: the dates of the test and of the general rollout, the criteria for choosing test users, the platforms that will get the merged view first, how ChatGPT will decide between answering and acting, what happens to desktop-only Work threads, and which controls Business and Enterprise administrators will receive. Until OpenAI publishes release notes for the change, the existing three-mode desktop app is the version subscribers should plan around, and the December usage pool is the change with a direct effect on their monthly budgets.
