ChatGPT Pro vs Business: Complete Comparison and Report on Price, Usage Limits, Premium Seats, and API Credits

ChatGPT Pro vs Business comparison cover with two ChatGPT logos on price, usage limits, Premium seats and API credits. Data Studios original cover

ChatGPT Pro is OpenAI's individual subscription for heavy users, sold in three monthly tiers at $100, $200 and $500. ChatGPT Business is OpenAI's team workspace, priced per user and requiring at least two users, with two seat types: Standard at $20 per user per month billed annually ($25 billed monthly) and Premium at $100 per user per month billed annually ($125 billed monthly). Premium seats were announced on August 10, 2026 and became available on August 25, and on October 29 OpenAI doubled the usage limits of all three Pro tiers and of Business Premium in a single change.

The decision between the two plans comes down to four verified facts. A Business Premium seat billed annually costs exactly what Pro $100 costs, $1,200 per person per year, and both carry the same usage multiple of five times the Plus or Standard allowance, so for a team of two or more heavy users Business delivers the Pro $100 level of usage plus SAML SSO, an admin console and no training on business data by default, at no extra cost. Pro keeps everything above that level to itself: the $200 tier with 20 times Plus usage, the $500 tier with Ultrafast mode for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, Composer predictions and dots texting, and larger context windows on the ChatGPT pricing page (128K Instant and 400K reasoning, against 54K and 256K on Business). The monthly API credit benefit is identical up to five heavy users ($100 per Pro $100 subscriber, $100 per Premium seat) and then diverges, because Business credits are pooled and capped at $500 per workspace per month while every Pro subscriber receives a separate grant.

For a freelancer or a single developer the choice is made by the rules, since Business requires at least two users. For a company with mixed needs, Business is the cheaper and safer structure because light users can sit on $20 Standard seats in the same workspace. Pro is the better choice for individuals who need more than five times Plus usage or the speed of Ultrafast. All prices in this comparison were verified on OpenAI's official pricing and documentation pages on November 4, 2026.

CHATGPT PRO AND CHATGPT BUSINESS: RELEASE TIMELINE AND PLAN IDENTITY.

Until April 2026 ChatGPT Pro was sold as a single $200 plan, and it has since been split into three tiers. OpenAI announced a new $100 Pro tier on April 9, 2026, describing it as offering five times more Codex usage than Plus, access to the exclusive Pro model and unlimited access to the Instant and Thinking models. The $500 tier appears in the current Codex and ChatGPT Work pricing documentation as the only self-serve plan with Ultrafast mode, which OpenAI enabled for GPT-6 Astra in the week of September 28 and for GPT-6.1 Sol on October 8.

ChatGPT Business is the team product, built around a shared workspace with an admin console. OpenAI's August 10 announcement introduced Premium seats as a second seat type with five times more usage than Standard, the removal of the five-hour usage limit and predictable weekly resets. An update on the same page dated August 25 states that the early sign-up promotion had ended and Premium seats were available. Standard and Premium seats can be mixed in one workspace and reassigned as needs change.

The two plans also differ in who owns the account. A Pro subscription belongs to one person, who manages billing and data settings alone. A Business workspace belongs to the organization, which controls members, sign-in and spending, and OpenAI states that Business content is not used to train its models by default.

CHATGPT PRO VS BUSINESS PRICING, BILLING AND SEAT RULES.

The price grid is simple once the seat types are separated. OpenAI's Codex and ChatGPT Work pricing page lists Pro "from $100" with plans at $100, $200 or $500 per month, and Business at $20 per user per month for two or more users billed annually, or $25 per user billed monthly. The Premium seat announcement gives $100 per user per month billed annually and $125 per user per month billed monthly. No annual price for Pro appears on the pages checked for this comparison.

Billing frequency matters more on Business than on Pro. Monthly billing adds 25% to both Standard and Premium seats, so a workspace that wants the Pro-equivalent price must commit to a year. Business also has a pay-as-you-go option for developer teams: the ChatGPT pricing page lists a usage-based BusinessCodex plan with "no fixed seat fee", built for automated code and security reviews, worktrees and cloud environments, with SAML SSO and MFA.

Two older official pages give a misleading picture and should not be used for this decision. The ChatGPT pricing page on chatgpt.com still labels models as GPT-5.5 and shows no dollar figures, and the Business pricing page on openai.com still lists a GPT-5.2-era model table without Premium seats. The current figures are those on the Codex and ChatGPT Work pricing documentation and in the Premium seat announcement.

USAGE LIMITS ON CHATGPT PRO TIERS AND BUSINESS STANDARD AND PREMIUM SEATS.

OpenAI publishes its usage allowances as ranges for Plus and Standard Business, and as multiples for the higher tiers. The pricing documentation gives estimates of local messages per five-hour window that are identical for Plus and a Standard Business seat, and it calls them "estimates, not fixed message limits", since consumption depends on task size, model and reasoning settings. Weekly limits may also apply to all plans.

Above that baseline, the plans are described relative to each other. The ChatGPT pricing page sells Pro with "5x or 20x more usage", corresponding to the $100 and $200 tiers, and the April announcement of the $100 tier specifies five times the Codex usage of Plus. Premium seats carry five times the usage of a Standard seat. OpenAI has published no multiple for the $500 tier. The pricing documentation adds that Pro "currently has no five-hour limit", and the Premium announcement says the same of Premium seats, so both plans run on weekly allowances only.

On October 29, OpenAI's Thibault Sottiaux wrote on his X account that the company was "doubling all usage limits for all Pro 100/200/500 tiers and Business Premium, effective today", and that it would not go ahead with a planned reduction of the Pro 200 allowance. The doubling applied to Pro and Premium together, so the five-to-one relationship between Pro $100 and Plus, and between Premium and Standard, appears unchanged; OpenAI has not published new absolute figures. Our report on OpenAI doubling ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium limits covers that change in detail, and our guide to ChatGPT usage limits by plan explains how the windows and fair-use rules work across every plan.

MODELS, SPEED MODES AND REASONING ACCESS IN CHATGPT PRO AND BUSINESS.

Both plans reach the current GPT-6 family in ChatGPT Work and Codex, with differences in timing and speed. When GPT-6 Astra arrived, OpenAI's announcement said it was available to "all Pro, Enterprise, and Business Premium users in ChatGPT Work and Codex" first, and that rollout to Plus and Business users might take a few days. GPT-6.1 Terra, released on October 26, is available in ChatGPT Work and Codex on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, but not in Chat. GPT-6.1 Sol became the default model in the Codex CLI's bundled catalog on October 7.

Speed modes are where Pro pulls ahead. Fast mode works on GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6.1 Terra, GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app, CLI and IDE extension for anyone signed in with ChatGPT, and consumes included usage at 2.5 times the Standard rate. Ultrafast mode, available for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, is restricted to Pro $500 and eligible Enterprise and Edu plans, and OpenAI's documentation states that other self-serve plans do not have it "even with purchased credits". A Business Premium seat therefore cannot buy its way into Ultrafast.

The Pro-only beta features are tied to the personal plan. Composer predictions for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol launched on October 9 for users aged 18 and older "with personal ChatGPT Pro plans in supported regions", and texting with a dot through iMessage and RCS is rolling out in beta to Pro users in the United States. Both features exclude Business workspaces.

CONTEXT WINDOWS, FILE HANDLING AND CHAT FEATURES COMPARED.

The context windows OpenAI lists for each plan favour Pro. The ChatGPT pricing page gives Pro an Instant window of 128K tokens, which it equates to about 250 pages, and a reasoning window of 400K tokens, about 680 pages. Business gets the same windows as Plus, 54K Instant (about 40 pages) and 256K reasoning (about 320 pages). These figures are published next to GPT-5.5 model labels that OpenAI has not yet updated, so they describe the plan allocation as listed today rather than a measured property of the GPT-6 models.

Chat allowances follow the same pattern. Pro is described with "unlimited" file uploads and "unlimited and faster image creation", plus maximum deep research and agent mode. Business offers unlimited use of the Instant model, flexible access to Thinking and Pro, and team features the individual plan lacks: shared projects, custom workspace GPTs and more than 60 apps, including Slack, Google Drive and GitHub.

Several desktop and security features are shared. SECURITY, ADMINISTRATION AND DATA TRAINING ON PRO AND BUSINESS.

The difference in data handling is the one most likely to decide a company purchase. On the ChatGPT pricing page, Pro shows "opt-out available" for model training, which means the subscriber must change the setting, while Business shows training as "No", and the pricing documentation repeats "No training on your business data by default". A Pro subscription used for client work therefore depends on each employee configuring a personal setting, while Business applies the rule to the whole workspace.

Business adds identity and administration controls that Pro does not offer at any price: SAML SSO, MFA, an admin console and SOC 2 Type 2 alignment. Premium seats add workspace-level management of billing, usage and spend limits in one place, with the option to upgrade or reassign seats. SCIM, Enterprise Key Management, role-based access controls, IP allowlisting, domain verification, data residency and the Compliance API remain Enterprise features.

MONTHLY API CREDITS FOR CHATGPT PRO AND BUSINESS SUBSCRIBERS.

Both plans now include API credits on the OpenAI Platform, and the rules differ in a way that changes the economics for larger teams. OpenAI's developer documentation lists monthly grants of $100, $200 and $500 for the three Pro tiers, $20 per paid Standard seat and $100 per paid Premium seat on Business. Business credits are pooled and "capped at $500 per workspace per month", while each Pro subscriber receives a separate grant.

The conditions are the same for both plans. The subscription must be paid and at least seven days old, free trials and complimentary subscriptions do not qualify, the same email must own both the ChatGPT account or workspace and the receiving API organization, and unused credits expire at the end of the billing cycle without rolling over. Annually prepaid Business workspaces receive the full year's grant at once, expiring at the end of the annual cycle. Our article on OpenAI's API credits for ChatGPT Pro and Business explains the claiming steps.

The cap binds early. Five Premium seats already produce $500 a month, so a sixth Premium seat adds usage in ChatGPT and Codex but no further API credits, while a sixth Pro $100 subscriber adds another $100.

COST OF CHATGPT PRO VS BUSINESS FOR FOUR TEAM SIZES.

The comparison below applies the official list prices to four common team shapes. The assumptions are stated so the arithmetic can be checked: heavy users are placed on Pro $100 or a Business Premium seat, which carry the same five-times multiple; light users are placed on Plus at $20 a month in the Pro scenario or on a Standard seat in the Business scenario; API credits are counted at the full monthly grant, which assumes every eligible account claims and uses them. The calculation was run in Python.

$4,320

$4,320

$5,400

$2,400 / $4,320

........

Three results follow from the numbers. On annual billing the two plans cost the same in every team shape, because a Premium seat matches Pro $100 and a Standard seat matches Plus, so the purchase decision rests on controls and features rather than on price. Monthly billing makes Business 25% more expensive than the equivalent Pro and Plus mix. API credits favour Pro in a team of heavy users above five people, where the $500 cap halves the Business grant at ten users, while they favour Business in a mixed team, because Standard seats earn $20 a month each and Plus subscriptions earn nothing.

For one person, the alternatives are Pro at $1,200, $2,400 or $6,000 a year. The smallest possible Business workspace, two Standard seats, costs $480 a year on annual billing, but it gives each user only Plus-level usage.

··········

WHAT OPENAI HAS NOT PUBLISHED ABOUT PRO AND BUSINESS LIMITS.

Several numbers a buyer would want are missing from OpenAI's official pages. The company publishes no absolute weekly allowance for any Pro tier or for Premium seats, only multiples relative to Plus and Standard, and it has published no multiple at all for the $500 tier. After the October 29 doubling, OpenAI's statement gave no new figures, and the multiples on the ChatGPT pricing page ("5x or 20x") were not updated.

A structural change will also apply to both plans, since OpenAI has updated its Help Center to say that ChatGPT and Codex will move to a single token-based usage limit from December, a change described in our report on the shared ChatGPT and Codex limit. How the five-times and twenty-times multiples translate into that token budget has not been published.

Finally, two official pricing pages remain outdated, as described in the pricing section, and the Help Center articles on Pro tiers and on Business models and limits could not be retrieved for this comparison. The figures above come only from the pages that could be fetched and dated on November 4, 2026.

WHICH TO CHOOSE: CHATGPT PRO OR CHATGPT BUSINESS BY TYPE OF USER.

The choice follows from four variables: the number of users, how heavily each one works, the need for company controls, and whether the top-end speed and context features matter.

........

User or workload

Recommended

Reason

Freelancer or solo developer

Pro $100 or $200

Business requires 2+ users

Solo developer running long agent sessions

Pro $500

Only self-serve plan with Ultrafast

Small company, 2-5 heavy users

Business Premium, annual

Same price as Pro $100, plus SSO, admin and no training by default

Mixed team of heavy and light users

Business with Premium and Standard seats

$20 Standard seats and pooled API credits

6+ heavy users relying on API credits

Pro $100 per person, or Business with paid API

Business credits stop at $500 a month

Long documents in Chat

Pro

128K/400K windows against 54K/256K

Developer team paying by usage

BusinessCodex

No fixed seat fee

Regulated data or residency needs

Enterprise

SCIM, EKM and data residency are not in Business

........

For an individual, Pro is the only plan of the two and the tier depends on volume: $100 for five times Plus, $200 for twenty times, and $500 when Ultrafast justifies five times the price of the entry tier. For any organization with two or more people, Business on annual billing reaches the Pro $100 level of usage at the same $1,200 per person, adds the controls a company needs, and lets light users stay on $240 Standard seats, which makes it the default choice unless a specific person needs the Pro $200 allowance, Ultrafast or the larger context windows.
