It’s a parallel to Microsoft’s approach, each playing to their own strengths (Microsoft in enterprise productivity, Google in search, ads, and cloud scale, and both in office suites). For an end user, if you use Google’s suite, Gemini will quietly enhance more and more of what you do – writing emails, finding files, navigating information – much like a Google-flavored Copilot. The difference from Microsoft is maybe that Google’s integration leans more on information retrieval (given their search DNA), whereas Microsoft leans on productivity tasks, but those lines are blurring as both race to do it all.
Pricing Models
ChatGPT Pricing – OpenAI’s pricing model for ChatGPT spans from free to enterprise. The Free tier of ChatGPT gives everyone access to the GPT-3.5 model with some limitations (slower during peak times, and certain advanced features disabled). This has been hugely important for adoption – hundreds of millions of people tried ChatGPT for free in 2023. For those who want more, OpenAI offers ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month. Plus subscribers get the more powerful GPT-4 model, generally faster responses (priority access even when demand is high), the ability to use Beta features like plugins, the browsing mode (when it’s enabled), and the multi-modal features (vision and voice). Essentially, $20/month turns ChatGPT from a basic Honda into a fully-loaded sports car version of the AI. Many enthusiasts, students, and professionals find this worth it, considering the capabilities of GPT-4 in aiding work or study. OpenAI has also released ChatGPT Enterprise, aimed at organizations. It doesn’t have a publicly listed price – it’s likely on a case-by-case contract depending on the number of seats and usage (some sources report that OpenAI was charging early enterprise adopters perhaps $100 per user per month or more, but that may vary or come down with scale). ChatGPT Enterprise includes unlimited GPT-4 with no message caps, the max 32k context window, and admin tools. It also comes with the strict privacy and security guarantees we discussed (no data used for training, SOC2 compliance, etc.). This offering is targeted at large companies – basically it’s ChatGPT Plus on steroids with business-grade support and privacy. OpenAI mentioned that ChatGPT has been used in 80% of Fortune 500 companies in some capacity, so there’s a real market to convert those to paid enterprise plans. There are also rumors/plans for a ChatGPT Business tier (something between Plus and Enterprise) and team-based options. In addition to the ChatGPT user-facing plans, there’s the API pricing: developers pay per “token” (chunks of words) to use the underlying models. For example, using GPT-4 via API might cost $0.03 per 1K tokens for input and $0.06 per 1K tokens for output (that was the initial pricing for GPT-4 8k context). This is separate from the ChatGPT UI subscription; it’s more for integrating into apps. But an enterprise might choose API billing instead of per-seat if they want to build their own interface. It’s worth noting that Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI service sells access to these models too, sometimes at slightly higher rates, but with Azure’s enterprise agreements. For an individual user comparing costs: ChatGPT at $20/mo vs competitors – it’s actually the same price point as a lot of others (Claude Pro, Google’s AI Premium, MS Copilot Pro, all hover ~$20). So $20 seems to be the “going rate” for advanced consumer AI. And ChatGPT’s free tier still undercuts most because many others require login or are limited (Bard is free but lacking some of ChatGPT’s features; Bing is free but only via Edge, etc.). So OpenAI has kept a nice free/pro split to maximize both reach and revenue.
Microsoft Copilot Pricing – Microsoft’s pricing is a bit more complex because they have different versions for different audiences (and they’ve adjusted these offerings over time). Initially, Microsoft 365 Copilot (the one integrated in Office apps for enterprise) was announced at $30 per user per month for commercial customers. This is an add-on on top of existing Microsoft 365 E3/E5 or Business Standard/Premium licenses. That price is pretty steep if you think of a company with thousands of employees, but Microsoft positioned it as value for productivity. They didn’t have a consumer offering of Copilot at that time – only enterprises in a preview. However, as of late 2024 and into 2025, Microsoft has expanded Copilot access. They announced that Copilot is included for consumers who subscribe to Microsoft 365 Personal or Family (which cost $6.99–$9.99/month for Personal, $99/year for Family). Essentially, if you have Office at home via a 365 subscription, you’ll get Copilot features in Word, Excel, etc. at no extra cost. That’s a big move to compete with Google which was starting to charge consumers via Google One. Additionally, Microsoft introduced Copilot Chat for enterprise (which is basically Bing Chat Enterprise) free with any Microsoft 365 plan – so business users could access an AI chat that is private without additional licensing, even if they didn’t pay for the full Copilot in apps. Where does Windows Copilot fit? Windows Copilot is being given free to anyone on Windows 11 as part of OS updates. You don’t have to pay for it; it’s like a built-in feature (though it does use the Bing backend, which for some advanced image creation might prompt you to sign in with a free Microsoft account). Microsoft’s idea here is to increase user engagement and perhaps upsell some to pro features. Now, speaking of Copilot Pro – Microsoft launched Copilot Pro at $20 per month for individuals. This is for those who want priority access and the latest AI features but are not enterprise users. It’s available to Microsoft 365 Personal/Family subscribers. It includes things like GPT-4 Turbo access (even if free might default to something else), Designer’s image generation built-in (which free might limit), and even upcoming features like the Copilot GPT builder (a way to create custom AI agents). So Copilot Pro is analogous to ChatGPT Plus in a sense – pay $20 to get the best experience – except it’s tied to the Microsoft 365 apps environment rather than a separate chat web app. For SMBs, Microsoft removed the 300-seat minimum on the $30 Copilot license, so a small business can also buy Copilot for say 10 users at $30 each. Microsoft is also likely to bundle Copilot in more of its bundles over time. Already we see Microsoft 365 Business Basic + Copilot starting at $36 (which effectively is Business Basic $6 + $30 Copilot). I suspect eventually some enterprise bundles (like E5 Deluxe or something) might include Copilot without separate add-on fee if they want to drive adoption. For now though, they’re keeping it as a premium add-on for enterprises. One should also note GitHub Copilot pricing: it’s separate, at $10/month for individuals, or included in some enterprise plans or in Copilot for Business at $19 per user (for GitHub’s enterprise). And Bing Chat Enterprise is free with Microsoft 365 but if a company wants just Bing Chat Enterprise standalone, I think Microsoft offered it at $5/user for non-365 customers. However, with Copilot Chat free now for 365 users, that standalone might not be emphasized. Summarizing: For an average person, Microsoft Copilot can cost $0 if you use just Windows or Bing, $9.99/mo if you subscribe to M365 (and get Copilot as a perk), or $20/mo for Pro to get even more. For companies, it’s mostly $30/user/mo for the fully integrated experience, which matches Google’s pricing for enterprise AI in Workspace.
Google Gemini Pricing – Google has mirrored Microsoft in pricing its AI for business at $30/user for enterprise. They call it Duet AI for Workspace (recently rebranded to Gemini for Workspace). In August 2023 Google announced Duet AI will be $30 per user per month for enterprise customers, the same as Microsoft 365 Copilot. And in a February 2024 update, Google introduced a lower tier: Gemini Business add-on at $20/user/month and Gemini Enterprise at $30/user. The Business tier is meant for smaller organizations or those who don’t need unlimited usage – it provides the same features but possibly with some limits (the wording suggests Enterprise might have fewer throttles, plus the meetings AI features). Both include the standalone chat and integrations in all apps. Google also decided to monetize consumer access via Google One AI Premium, priced at $19.99/month. This is an upgrade on the regular Google One (which is mainly a storage plan). AI Premium gives advanced Bard capabilities (like likely using the Gemini Ultra model when it becomes available as “Bard Advanced”) and it also bundles the 2 TB storage and other perks. Essentially, Google’s saying: if you’re a power user who might pay for ChatGPT Plus, pay us instead and you’ll get great AI plus storage and some YouTube Premium trials etc. It’s a value bundle. They even had promotions with Pixel phones or Verizon plans to offer AI Premium at a discount. The standard Bard is free – and they haven’t indicated plans to charge for basic Bard. It’s possible in future Bard Advanced (with Ultra model) might be a paid thing, but as of now they route those who want more to Google One. For developers, Google offers the Gemini API. Pricing there is comparable to OpenAI’s: a rough example from data is text input might be $0.15 per million tokens and output $0.30 per million for the Gemini Pro via Vertex (just hypothetical values – actual might differ per model size). They also have an image generation pricing (because Gemini can do images too); one source said images up to 1024px cost ~$0.039 each via API. So Google is monetizing Gemini through cloud usage as well. Not to forget, Google will monetize via increased use of its platform (more searches that show ads, more cloud usage, etc.) – so even free Bard contributes indirectly to revenue. All told, Google’s consumer vs enterprise pricing strategy now closely follows Microsoft/OpenAI: free basic access to hook users, ~$20 for premium individuals, ~$30 for enterprises. One difference is Google tying it to Google One, which is a broader subscription, whereas OpenAI is pure-play AI sub. But that could attract people who also want cloud storage etc. From a customer perspective, if you already pay for Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, these AI addons make those subscriptions more valuable (and also more “sticky” so you don’t cancel). For someone deciding where to spend $20–$30 on AI, it might come down to which ecosystem they use more. In any case, competition is likely to push prices in the future – but for now these AI assistants are premium add-ons, reflecting their cutting-edge nature.
Privacy and Data Security
ChatGPT Privacy – When ChatGPT first launched to the public, it raised many privacy concerns. Users were essentially inputting possibly sensitive questions and data into a system without clarity on how that data would be used. OpenAI’s initial policy was that user conversations could be reviewed by trainers and used to improve the models. This led some companies to ban employees from using ChatGPT for work due to fear of leaking confidential info. OpenAI responded by giving users more control. They introduced a toggle to disable chat history, which ensures those conversations are not used in training. Also, any user can delete their past chats (OpenAI will then permanently remove those from their systems after a period). For ChatGPT Enterprise, OpenAI made strong guarantees: “We do not train on your business data or conversations, and our models don’t learn from your usage”. They also encrypt all conversations in transit and at rest, and the service is SOC 2 Type II compliant. Essentially, Enterprise is isolated – your data stays in your instance. This was critical to get businesses on board. Additionally, OpenAI offers a trust portal and privacy page detailing their practices and compliance. They claim that even for ChatGPT Plus (non-enterprise), they don’t use payment info or account info for training, just the chat content, and that too can be opted out. It’s worth noting that OpenAI is headquartered in the US and subject to US laws, but they’ve been working on GDPR compliance after some hiccups (Italy temporarily banned ChatGPT until they added more disclosures and controls). So user data privacy is an ongoing focus. Another angle is that OpenAI’s models, during their training on internet data, may have ingested personal data that was public. There have been discussions about that, but for a user using ChatGPT now, the main question is: “If I share something with ChatGPT, who can see it or use it?” The answer: OpenAI staff might see it in aggregated or flagged form unless you opt out or are enterprise. And it might get incorporated into future model parameters in subtle ways (not direct memorization unless it was something like a unique phrase). So cautious users don’t put secrets in ChatGPT. On the flip side, ChatGPT is not connected to your personal files or system unless you give it that info. It doesn’t know who you are (beyond maybe your account name) and it doesn’t automatically pull any data about you from outside. So privacy in terms of it leaking your personal info to others – that only happens if it was in training data (e.g., if you’re a public figure, it might know info about you from the internet). There were cases where ChatGPT accidentally showed snippets of other users’ conversation titles due to a bug – OpenAI fixed that and took it seriously. That’s a reminder that any online service has a risk of data leaks. For API usage, OpenAI by default does not use API data for training (since 2021) unless you opt in. So businesses building on the API have a fair bit of assurance that their data stays their data. In summary, OpenAI has stepped up privacy: free users have some control, and enterprise users have strong guarantees. But individuals should still be mindful – treat it like talking to a third-party service which you wouldn’t hand your social security number to, for example.
Microsoft Copilot Privacy – Microsoft, dealing with enterprise clients for decades, has been quite attuned to the privacy and compliance requirements. For Copilot in enterprise (Microsoft 365), Microsoft states that “all data processing happens inside the Microsoft 365 cloud, with privacy and compliance measures in place”. What that means: when Copilot accesses your emails, SharePoint files, etc., it’s not sending that data to OpenAI or some public server; it’s handled within your tenant’s dedicated space in Microsoft’s cloud. Microsoft uses OpenAI’s models but via the Azure OpenAI service, which is enterprise-controlled. They likely send some abstracted prompts to the model but with the needed safeguards (and the model might even run on Azure servers in a contained way). They also mention Commercial Data Protection – when you’re signed in with a work account, any Copilot chat goes through Bing Chat Enterprise if it’s a web query, meaning that the content of your query and answer is not logged or used for ads or seen by Microsoft AI trainers. It’s ephemeral and only for you. The data from your org (like a Word document you asked to summarize) is not used to train any underlying AI model; it’s only used on the fly to generate your result. Microsoft has also committed to not using customer content for improving AI in their enterprise contracts – a big promise to alleviate IP concerns. Another privacy element is permissioning: Copilot respects the same permissions as you have. If you ask “Summarize the project roadmap” but you only have access to half the documents, it won’t magically show info from ones you don’t have rights to. It also won’t reveal things it sees in your content to other users. It’s basically as if each user has their own personal AI that can only see what they can see. On the consumer side, Windows Copilot and Bing Chat: Bing Chat Enterprise aside, if you use the free Bing Chat, Microsoft does collect your conversations (they anonymize them after some time, removing account IDs, and use them to improve the service). They also have policies to filter out personal data detection, etc. Windows Copilot might send diagnostic data – for instance, if you ask it to do something on your PC, it may log that command. Microsoft’s privacy policy covers these scenarios. But importantly, if you sign in to Windows Copilot with your work account, it switches to that protected mode (enterprise chat). So you have control by account context. Microsoft also touts compliance certifications: they meet standards like GDPR, ISO 27001, HIPAA BAA available for Azure OpenAI, etc., so enterprises can check those boxes. Microsoft being an enterprise software provider already had a lot of privacy infrastructure (customer lockbox, data residency options, etc.), which likely extend to Copilot services. One interesting feature: Microsoft Security Copilot (for security teams) actually can ingest sensitive incident data, but Microsoft promises that stays within that tool, not shared – they even are working on an isolated instance that can run entirely within a customer’s environment for ultra-sensitive scenarios. That’s beyond typical usage, but indicates the lengths they’ll go for privacy if needed. In plain language for a user: You can feel safe that Copilot won’t leak your work data out of your organization. If you’re just using it at home, your chats might be reviewed to improve the product, but Microsoft is not using them to profile you for ads (if you use Bing Chat, unlike normal Bing which does profile for ads, Bing Chat usage is separate and not used for advertising purposes). And any sensitive info you input as a consumer, you should still be cautious (as with any cloud AI), but Microsoft isn’t specifically mining it beyond service improvement. Another small thing: when Copilot generates content, especially for enterprise, Microsoft says they will provide citations or context so you know where info came from (reducing the chance you unknowingly get a wrong fact and run with it). That’s an accuracy thing but also a transparency thing, which is part of responsible AI and trust.
Google Gemini Privacy – Google, dealing with both consumers and enterprise, has had to make clear separations in data usage. For consumer-facing Bard, when you use it with your Google Account, Google does store your conversations (you can see them in a side panel, and you can clear them). They use that data to improve Bard (unless you opt out by deleting it, etc.). However, they allow you to use Bard without saving history if you choose a privacy setting or use it while logged out (similar to ChatGPT’s no-history mode). The more significant commitments are when Bard is allowed to access your personal data via extensions. Google explicitly states: if Bard reads your Gmail or Docs via the extension, that personal data is not used to train the model and not visible to human reviewers. It’s only used transiently to answer your question. That was a huge part of their privacy announcement – essentially, they treat your personal Google data with the same care as always (which means it’s governed by your Google account privacy settings, and not flipped into some public pool). For enterprises using Google Workspace’s AI (Duet/Gemini), Google similarly promises that your data stays within your organization’s domain. They even say “your conversations are not used for advertising, nor to train generative models”. All the compliance standards that Workspace has (ISO, SOC2, GDPR, etc.) apply. Google actually has a slight advantage that many companies already trust Gmail/Drive with their data; adding AI on top doesn’t change where the data resides. It’s processed likely on Google’s servers but logically inside your environment. Google also offers admin controls – an admin can enable/disable the AI features for their org or certain departments, etc., to align with their policies. For Google Cloud’s Vertex AI, data you send to the model via API is not used to train Google’s models either (much like OpenAI’s API policy). One of the earlier stumbles was when Google’s employees themselves were hesitant to use Bard for coding because the terms said data might be seen by humans. Google then improved that by clarifying and improving internal privacy so that enterprise mode Bard wouldn’t do that. On the consumer side, Google of course has a business model around ads, so users might wonder if using Bard will feed into their advertising profile. Google has said Bard conversations aren’t used for ads personalization – which is good, they don’t need more controversy. They likely keep Bard completely separate from ad systems (which use your search queries, YouTube views, etc.). One challenge: information accuracy and user trust. Google has an AI Principles policy to not reveal sensitive info or to avoid certain topics, and they’ve built safety filters into Gemini to not output personal identifiable info about private individuals, etc. But if you explicitly ask it about someone public, it might answer from web data. Google has an advantage in privacy when it comes to web data because they’ve been dealing with indexing and removing sensitive content (like if someone requests removal, it’s gone from search and likely not in training data beyond older snapshot). But it’s possible that if something is on the web, Gemini knows it. The user’s responsibility is to not ask the AI to do something with data they shouldn’t share. And Google’s responsibility is to keep whatever is shared secure – which they are doing via encryption and isolating sessions. Another aspect is auditing and logs. Enterprise admins can likely see logs of AI tool usage (for compliance) and those logs are protected. Consumers can see their Bard activity and delete it. In summary, Google’s stance is similar: enterprise data is sacrosanct – not used to improve Google’s models or services outside that customer. Consumer interactions with Bard are used to improve the AI (to the extent they aren’t your personal Gmail content, which is not used). And none of it is used for targeted ads. So, all three – OpenAI, Microsoft, Google – have converged on a privacy approach: your data is your data, especially for businesses, and transparency/consent for any training usage. For an end user, that means these companies are not intentionally reading your stuff, but always exercise normal caution (for instance, if you ask Bard to draft a resignation letter, that info isn’t going to your boss or anything – it’s between you and Google’s AI, which keeps it in your account’s history until you delete).
General Observation: Across the board, the competition between ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini has led to rapid improvements and convergence in many areas. They all offer powerful features (often inspired by one another), they all strive for high accuracy while cautioning about limitations, and they each are finding ways to integrate deeply into the daily life of users – whether through operating systems, productivity software, or search engines. Pricing has also aligned to similar points, giving consumers and enterprises choices based on ecosystem preference rather than cost. For users, this is a boon: whether you are a casual user wanting help writing a story, a software developer looking to code faster, or an enterprise worker aiming to automate reports, you now have multiple top-tier AI assistants to choose from. Each has its edge – ChatGPT is often praised for its conversational finesse and creativity, Copilot for its seamless workflow integration, and Gemini for its multimodal prowess and real-time knowledge. The best choice may depend on what tools you already use and what tasks you need done. It’s an exciting landscape, and as these systems evolve through 2024 and 2025, we can expect even more advanced capabilities, more integration, and hopefully even more reliable and safe operation.
