Microsoft Copilot Free in 2026: features, limits, file uploads, Think Deeper, Search, and sign-in
Updated: Sep 17
Microsoft Copilot remains available for free and can be used without a paid Microsoft 365 subscription. The free product includes general AI chat, web-grounded answers, writing help, supported conversation modes, and file analysis.
Signing in is not required for every basic interaction, but Microsoft ties several capabilities to a signed-in account, including history, longer conversations, voice, image creation, and personalization-related features.

FREE COPILOT IS NOT JUST A DEMO
Microsoft positions the free product as a usable AI companion for general questions, brainstorming, writing, summarization, web-based research, and supported document analysis.

THINK DEEPER IS AVAILABLE WITHOUT A PAID PLAN
Microsoft currently states that Think Deeper usage is not limited. Personal, Family, and Premium subscribers receive priority when capacity is constrained, so paid access changes service priority rather than simply unlocking the mode.
··········
SMART USES GPT-5
Microsoft's consumer support documentation says Smart uses GPT-5 and can respond quickly or think more deeply depending on the task. This is one of the few consumer modes where Microsoft explicitly names the underlying model.
··········
FREE USERS CAN ANALYZE FILES
Copilot supports file uploads for analysis. The current consumer limit is up to 20 files in one conversation with a 50 MB maximum per file.
··········
SIGNING IN EXPANDS THE EXPERIENCE
A Microsoft account enables history, image creation, longer conversations, voice interactions, and other features that are unavailable or more limited when using Copilot anonymously.
··········
PAID PLANS MOSTLY INCREASE ACCESS AND INTEGRATION
Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium, and Pro add higher Copilot usage, Office app integration, storage, and progressively stronger agentic or priority capabilities. The distinction is broader than simply free versus unlimited messages.
··········
FREE LIMITS CAN BE CAPACITY-DEPENDENT
Microsoft does not publish one universal message number for every consumer Copilot feature. Some access is dynamic and capacity-based, so a static daily-message figure can quickly become misleading.
