OpenAI begins testing Sponsored Agents in ChatGPT and expands AI tools for advertisers

OpenAI has begun testing Sponsored Agents inside ChatGPT, creating a new advertising format in which users can move from a conventional sponsored placement into a direct conversation with a business-sponsored AI agent.
The test is starting with selected U.S. advertisers and sits alongside a broader expansion of OpenAI's advertising stack, including new AI tools that can create, update and analyze campaigns through natural-language instructions.
OpenAI says Sponsored Agents will be clearly labeled and kept separate from ChatGPT's independent answers and from the user's original conversation, which is an important product boundary because the sponsored interaction is designed to become more conversational without being presented as part of the assistant's normal response.
The company is also extending Ads Manager with AI-assisted campaign creation, creative generation, performance analysis and optional contextual rewriting, while adding HubSpot as its first CRM partner and Shopify as its first e-commerce partner.

SPONSORED AGENTS ADD A CONVERSATIONAL LAYER AFTER THE AD
A standard digital ad generally ends with a click to a landing page, product page or app store. Sponsored Agents insert an additional conversational layer between the ad impression and the external website.
A user who encounters an eligible ChatGPT ad can start a conversation with the advertiser's sponsored agent, ask follow-up questions and then move to the advertiser's website if the interaction becomes useful enough to continue.
This makes the advertising unit less dependent on a single headline, image and landing-page click. The advertiser can instead expose a guided conversational interface that can answer questions, explain products or services and reduce the amount of information a user has to extract manually from a website.
The commercial value depends heavily on execution. A sponsored agent that merely repeats marketing copy adds little beyond a conventional ad, while an agent that can answer detailed product, pricing, availability or comparison questions could shorten the path between discovery and action.

OPENAI IS KEEPING THE SPONSORED EXPERIENCE SEPARATE FROM CHATGPT ANSWERS
OpenAI is explicitly separating the new format from the assistant's normal output. Sponsored Agents are labeled as sponsored and are not supposed to alter, rank or become part of ChatGPT's independent response to the user's original request.
That separation is consistent with the broader ChatGPT Ads architecture, where ads are presented as distinct paid placements rather than blended into the generated answer.
OpenAI's current advertising rules also state that ordinary conversations, chat history and memory are not shared with advertisers. When a user chooses to send messages directly to an advertiser through an ad experience, the advertiser can see the messages sent in that sponsored interaction rather than receiving unrestricted access to the rest of the user's ChatGPT history.
INTERACTION | WHO CONTROLS IT | RELATION TO THE ORIGINAL CHAT |
ChatGPT answer | OpenAI assistant | Independent response |
Sponsored ad | Advertiser placement delivered by OpenAI's ad system | Shown separately from the answer |
Sponsored Agent | Business-sponsored conversational experience | User enters it deliberately from the ad |
Advertiser website | Business | External destination after the sponsored interaction |

CHATGPT ADS MANAGER CAN NOW OPERATE THROUGH NATURAL LANGUAGE
The second part of the announcement targets advertisers rather than end users. OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT Ads Manager so marketers can use natural-language instructions to perform work that normally requires moving through campaign menus, forms and reporting dashboards.
The tool can create or update campaigns, transform a website or campaign brief into a proposed campaign structure, review performance and produce optimization recommendations.
The practical change is that the advertising interface begins to resemble an agentic workflow rather than a conventional dashboard: the advertiser describes the objective, while the system translates that objective into campaign objects, creative suggestions and analytical actions.
This can reduce setup friction for smaller businesses that do not have a dedicated performance-marketing team, but professional advertisers still need to review targeting, bids, budgets, creative claims and measurement settings before treating AI-generated campaign decisions as final.

OPENAI IS USING AI TO GENERATE AND ADAPT AD CREATIVE
Ads Manager can suggest ad copy and images using the advertiser's landing page and campaign objective as inputs. That creates a direct pipeline from existing business material into campaign creative without requiring every asset to be written or designed manually.
OpenAI is also adding an optional text-customization feature that can adapt existing headlines and descriptions to the context of a conversation and translate the copy into the user's preferred language.
For advertisers, contextual customization could increase relevance because the same product can be described differently to a user comparing alternatives, searching for a specific feature or asking a purchase-intent question.
The main constraint is control. Because the copy can change dynamically, advertisers need safeguards around factual accuracy, regulated claims, brand language and promotional terms. The value of the feature therefore depends not only on generation quality but on how tightly the permitted variation is governed.

HUBSPOT AND SHOPIFY CONNECT ADS TO CUSTOMER AND COMMERCE SYSTEMS
OpenAI named HubSpot as its first customer-relationship-management partner and Shopify as its first e-commerce partner, extending the advertising product beyond ad creation into the systems businesses already use to manage leads and transactions.
The HubSpot relationship can connect advertising activity more directly with CRM workflows, where companies track contacts, leads and customer relationships after an initial interaction.
The Shopify integration creates a clearer commerce path. OpenAI says the Shopify app will launch internationally in markets where ChatGPT Ads is available beginning September 23.
The combination of Sponsored Agents, CRM integration and e-commerce integration suggests that OpenAI is trying to connect three stages that have traditionally been handled by separate products: ad discovery, conversational qualification and downstream customer or transaction management.

DATA STUDIOS MAPS THE NEW AD FORMAT AS A FOUR-STAGE CONVERSION FUNNEL
The new structure can be mapped as a four-stage commercial funnel rather than a single ad click.
STAGE | USER ACTION | COMMERCIAL FUNCTION |
1. Ad exposure | User sees a clearly labeled sponsored placement | Creates awareness and captures intent |
2. Sponsored conversation | User opens the business-sponsored agent and asks questions | Qualifies needs and reduces information friction |
3. Website or commerce handoff | User moves to the advertiser's site or connected commerce flow | Converts interest into an external action |
4. CRM / measurement | Business records, measures and follows the resulting interaction | Connects acquisition to downstream performance |
A conventional click-based ad compresses stages one and two into a single decision: either the user clicks or does not. Sponsored Agents create an intermediate environment in which the user can resolve uncertainty before leaving ChatGPT.
That intermediate step may improve conversion for products that require explanation, but it also introduces a new metric: the quality of the sponsored conversation itself. Advertisers will eventually need to evaluate not only impressions and clicks but whether agent conversations meaningfully improve qualified traffic, conversion rate or customer value.

CHATGPT ADS ALREADY HAS A MEASUREMENT AND AUCTION LAYER
OpenAI's current Ads Manager reporting includes impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC, average CPM and conversions, giving advertisers a familiar performance framework around the newer conversational format.
ChatGPT Ads currently supports both reach-oriented CPM bidding and click-oriented CPC bidding, while OpenAI describes the underlying selection system as a relevance-weighted second-price auction.
Sponsored Agents potentially add richer post-impression behavior to that framework. The economic question is whether a longer sponsored interaction produces enough additional value to justify the extra computational cost and complexity relative to a conventional ad followed by a website click.
If the agent meaningfully answers purchase questions before the handoff, the advertiser may receive fewer but better-qualified site visits. If the agent adds friction or provides generic answers, it could instead delay the conversion path without improving outcome quality.

THE TEST STARTS IN THE UNITED STATES WHILE CHATGPT ADS IS ALREADY BROADER
Sponsored Agents are initially being tested with selected U.S. advertisers, so the feature should not be interpreted as a universal ChatGPT capability at launch.
The wider ChatGPT Ads platform has already expanded beyond the United States, including European markets and other international regions, which gives OpenAI an existing distribution base if the sponsored-agent format performs well enough to expand.
For users, ads remain plan-dependent. OpenAI currently places advertising on eligible Free and Go experiences, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not show ads.
PRODUCT LAYER | WHAT IS NEW | WHAT REMAINS UNCHANGED |
User experience | Optional Sponsored Agent conversations after ads | ChatGPT answers remain independent from paid placements |
Advertiser workflow | AI-assisted campaign creation, analysis and creative generation | Advertisers still control budgets, objectives and campaign decisions |
Data boundary | Users can send messages directly in a sponsored interaction | Advertisers do not receive unrestricted access to ordinary chats, history or memory |
Commercial stack | HubSpot and Shopify integrations | External business systems still handle CRM and commerce workflows |

OPENAI IS MOVING FROM AD PLACEMENTS TOWARD AI-NATIVE COMMERCE INTERACTIONS
The Sponsored Agents test changes the role of the advertisement from a static interruption or recommendation into an interactive commercial interface.
At the same time, the advertiser side is becoming more automated: campaign setup, creative generation, reporting analysis and optimization increasingly take place through natural-language AI tools rather than only through manual dashboard operations.
Together, those two changes point toward an advertising system in which AI operates on both sides of the transaction: a business can use AI to build and manage the campaign, while a user can interact with an AI agent before deciding whether to visit the business, submit a lead or make a purchase.
The central strategic shift is broader than the introduction of another ad format. OpenAI is building an AI-native commercial layer around ChatGPT in which advertising, conversation, campaign operations, CRM and commerce can be connected inside a single acquisition flow.
