Perplexity in 2026: Search, Research, Computer, Brain, models, and current use cases

Perplexity in September 2026 is no longer only an AI search engine. Its product stack now spans Search, Pro Search, Research, Computer, Brain, Projects, file analysis, model selection, and app-connected workflows.
The old March 2026 feature snapshot is therefore better understood as a transition point. This page now tracks the current product architecture and the practical role of each layer.

PERPLEXITY IS NOW A MULTI-LAYER PRODUCT
Search remains the fastest layer, but Perplexity has expanded into autonomous research and action. The same account can move from a cited web answer to a long-form report, then to a Computer task that uses connectors or produces a spreadsheet, presentation, document, or web app.

Standard Search is optimized for quick cited answers. Pro Search allocates more search depth and model capability, supports richer source synthesis, and can use advanced models selected by eligible subscribers.

RESEARCH HANDLES LONGER MULTI-STEP INVESTIGATION
Research is designed for questions that need autonomous exploration rather than one retrieval pass. Free users currently receive a very small monthly allowance, while paid tiers receive larger monthly allocations.

COMPUTER MOVES FROM ANSWERING TO DOING
Computer can operate across connected tools and files, run subagents, create deliverables, and execute longer workflows. During 2026 Perplexity added Computer in Microsoft 365, Personal Computer for Mac and Windows, shared workspaces, email-based task delegation, scheduled automations, and additional orchestrator models.

BRAIN ADDS WORKING MEMORY TO COMPUTER
Brain is rolling out in Research Preview for Max users. It builds a working model from the user's own sessions, connected tools, files, artifacts, and corrections so Computer can act with richer project context. Brain can be disabled independently and incognito sessions are excluded.

MODEL ACCESS DEPENDS ON PRODUCT AND PLAN
Perplexity does not use one universal model everywhere. Search offers a selectable model set on paid plans, Max unlocks additional high-end models, and Computer has its own orchestrator and subagent model matrix. A model visible in Computer is not automatically the same as a selectable Search model.

WHAT CHANGED SINCE THE MARCH 2026 SNAPSHOT
The largest structural changes are the rise of Computer as an agentic workspace, the addition of Brain, broader connector-based workflows, shared projects, new model families such as GPT-5.6 and Claude 5, and the split between search-oriented and action-oriented usage limits.
