Can ChatGPT Create Videos?

The race to translate mere text into moving images has been heating up for years, and by early 2025 the technology finally reached ChatGPT itself. Yet the rollout is far from monolithic: what you can create—and where—still depends on your subscription tier and location.

ChatGPT’s Sora turns text prompts into silent video clips.
It’s enabled for Plus, Pro, and Enterprise users in supported regions.
Plus gets 5-second 720 p clips; Pro gets 20-second 1080 p clips, all under strict safety filters.
If Sora isn’t live for you, use ChatGPT for script and prompt creation instead.

1 What ChatGPT can do right now

ChatGPT’s Sora model lets paid users turn a prompt into a downloadable MP4 clip directly inside the chat interface. The feature supports three aspect ratios (widescreen, square, vertical) and produces silent, photorealistic footage suitable for rapid prototyping, social posts, or inspiration reels.

2 Where the feature is available

Sora is live for Plus, Pro, and Enterprise accounts in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Australia, and several other non-EU markets. Access may be temporarily throttled for brand-new Plus subscribers when traffic is high.

3 Clip length, resolution, and quotas

By plan

  • Plus  Up to 5 seconds · 720 p · 50 clips per billing month

  • Pro  Up to 20 seconds · 1080 p · 500 clips per billing month

  • Enterprise  Custom limits negotiated per tenant

A separate research playground continues to demonstrate one-minute 1080 p generations, but those longer clips are not yet available inside ordinary ChatGPT workspaces.

Universal constraints

  • All Sora clips are silent.

  • Only one clip can render at a time per user.

  • Real-person likenesses, explicit material, and copyrighted characters are blocked.

4 How to generate a video in ChatGPT

  1. Open a new chat and switch the model selector to GPT-4o (Video) or click Create with Sora.

  2. Enter a concise, visual prompt—for example:

“Fifteen-second overhead shot of neon-lit streets in a futuristic Tokyo at night, light rain on reflective pavement.”

  3. Pick aspect ratio and duration within your plan’s limits.

  4. Wait 30–60 seconds while the clip renders, then download or regenerate as needed.

5 Working without direct access

Even in regions where Sora is still rolling out, ChatGPT remains valuable for:

  • Drafting scripts, shot lists, and storyboards.

  • Refining prompts for third-party video generators such as Pika or Runway.

  • Providing editing and post-production checklists once footage is in hand.

6 Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT does create native video via Sora, but only on paid tiers in supported regions.

  • Clip length is tier-dependent—5 s for Plus, 20 s for Pro—while all output remains silent and capped at 1080 p.

  • Strict safety filters block disallowed content, and real-time server load can throttle access for new subscribers.

  • Where Sora is unavailable, ChatGPT still excels at ideation, scripting, and prompt engineering for external video tools.
