Supported File Types You Can Upload to Claude

ree

Claude by Anthropic supports a wide range of file types designed to help users analyze, summarize, and extract insights from documents, spreadsheets, images, and data sets. Its file upload capabilities are available across the Claude web app, mobile app, API, and enterprise integrations, making it suitable for research, reporting, and knowledge management workflows.

Supported document formats

Claude accepts multiple document formats commonly used for reading, summarization, and data extraction:

  • PDF — Suitable for research papers, contracts, manuals, and scanned documents.

  • DOCX — Microsoft Word documents for contracts, reports, and structured writing.

  • TXT — Plain text files for quick and simple data ingestion.

  • RTF — Rich Text Format files for styled document processing.

  • ODT — OpenDocument Text for compatibility with open-source office tools.

  • HTML — Web-based structured documents and formatted reports.

  • EPUB — E-book files for reading and summarizing larger text volumes.

  • JSON — Structured data documents for technical and analysis-focused tasks.

These formats allow Claude to analyze and summarize large bodies of text while maintaining layout-sensitive information for improved comprehension.

Supported spreadsheets and structured data files

Claude can handle multiple structured data formats suitable for analytics and reporting workflows:

  • CSV — Comma-separated files for tabular data analysis.

  • TSV — Tab-separated formats used for technical or bulk datasets.

  • JSON — For semi-structured datasets and document-based storage.

  • XLSX — Supported when the advanced analysis tool is enabled or through code-based processing inside Claude’s environment.

For spreadsheets, Claude can extract insights, generate pivot tables, analyze trends, and summarize rows and columns depending on the selected processing mode.

Supported presentation and markup formats

Recent updates expanded Claude’s capabilities to process presentation files and lightweight markup documents:

  • PPTX — PowerPoint presentation uploads for summarizing slides, extracting talking points, or generating meeting recaps.

  • Markdown (.md) — Used by developers and writers for technical documentation and formatting-sensitive content.

These formats extend Claude’s utility for business reports, presentations, and collaborative documentation projects.

Supported image formats

When using models with vision capabilities, Claude can analyze images to extract information, interpret charts, and summarize visual data. Supported image formats include:

  • JPEG (.jpg)

  • PNG

  • GIF

  • WEBP

Image uploads are limited to:

  • 30 MB per file

  • Maximum resolution of 8000 × 8000 pixels

  • Recommended minimum resolution of 1000 × 1000 pixels for best analysis results

Claude’s visual processing is suitable for tasks such as reviewing diagrams, inspecting screenshots, interpreting charts, or identifying document layouts.

File upload limits and project workflows

Claude enforces specific size and count restrictions for uploaded files:

  • Maximum file size per upload: 30 MB

  • Maximum files per chat session: 20 files

  • In Claude Projects (persistent knowledge spaces), there is no limit on the number of files, but each file must remain within the 30 MB size cap.

  • Token and context usage depend on the model selected, meaning very large documents may be partially summarized if the maximum processing limit is reached.

Files API and enterprise-scale support

Anthropic provides a Files API for developers and enterprises requiring more advanced file handling and automation:

  • Supported formats include PDF, TXT, images, and other structured text-based inputs.

  • Files are referenced via reusable document blocks across conversations and tasks.

  • Standard API users can upload files up to 5 GB each, supporting up to 10,000 files per organization.

  • Enterprise plans increase per-file upload size to 10 GB, enabling high-volume workflows for legal, financial, or technical datasets.

This level of API access is optimized for teams managing continuous data ingestion, RAG pipelines, or knowledge-driven reporting environments.
